What is GIFT Nifty, and how do traders read it before 9:15?

Updated 2026-10-24 · 5 min read

Indian stock markets open at 9:15 am, but the world keeps trading overnight. GIFT Nifty is the closest thing India has to a live overnight indicator for the Nifty 50, which is why it is usually the first number traders check in the morning.

What GIFT Nifty is

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract on the Nifty 50 index, traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat, India's international financial services centre. It replaced SGX Nifty, which traded in Singapore, when trading moved to GIFT City in July 2023.

GIFT Nifty contracts are priced in US dollars and trade for close to 21 hours a day in two sessions, roughly 6:30 am to 3:40 pm and 4:35 pm to 2:45 am IST. That long window lets it react to US and European markets and to global news while Indian exchanges are closed.

How traders use it

Before the open, traders compare GIFT Nifty with the previous Nifty 50 close. If GIFT Nifty is trading well above that close, the market is said to be indicating a positive or "gap-up" start; well below suggests a weak or "gap-down" start.

Why it is only an indication

  • It is a futures price, so it normally carries a small premium or discount to the Nifty index itself.
  • Late-night hours can be thinly traded, so a quiet move may not hold.
  • News can arrive between GIFT Nifty's last trade and the Indian open.
  • The actual opening price is set in the pre-open session from 9:00 to 9:15 am, based on real orders in India.

Read it with other cues

GIFT Nifty is most useful alongside the overnight US close, the morning in Asian markets, crude oil, the dollar and the previous day's FII and DII flows. When most of these point the same way, the morning picture is clearer; when they disagree, expect a more uncertain open.
